Socially Speaking: Father's Day Weekend

Posted by Shorebread | Friday, June 15, 2012

Father’s Day is this Sunday, June 17th. Don’t forget to do something really cool with your dad; the beach, the boardwalk, go-karts, fishing. There are lots of options on the shore. Socially Speaking, we’ve got a few events we think you should check out this weekend. Listed below you’ll find some ShoreBread suggestions that are perfect for you and your dad…

Delmarva Chicken Festival

The 63rd annual Delmarva Chicken Festival takes place this Friday and Saturday, June 15th and 16th at the Centre at Salisbury. This year’s festival is expected to draw more than 20,000 visitors from the region. A carnival, by Shaw Amusements, will be set up for children. The rides and games will appeal to children and adults alike. The Festival will be open from 10 am – 10 pm both days.

Art's Alive

Art’s Alive celebrates 12 years as Ocean City’s biggest and best fine art show. What could be better than fine art at the beach? How about fine art for sale around a beautiful lagoon in a picturesque park with expansive bay views? Visit 100 artists as they sell their work. Have lunch at the Artists’ Café and enjoy live music while your children enjoy free art activities. Art’s Alive takes place outdoors, rain or shine, in Northside Park (125th Street, bayside). The show is open from 9 am – 5 pm on Saturday and Sunday.

Blackwater National Wildlife Walk

Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge will be hosting a Forest and Nature Walk on Saturday. The hike is open to the public and begins at 1 pm. A guided walk will take guests through the forest’s trails where they can identify species of trees, plants, animals, and insects. All participants should meet at the Woods Trail parking lot. Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge is located in Cambridge, MD and includes over 27,000 acres of rich tidal marsh land and evergreen forests.

Wicomikazis Roller Derby

Come out and watch the Wicomikazis take on the Lancaster’s Dutchland Diamond State during a double-header bout. 2012 marks our local team’s second full-bouting season as a league. The bouts take place at Mitchell’s Martial Arts on Sunday, June 17th at 6:30 pm; the whistle blowing occurs at 7 pm. There will be a halftime demonstration by the indomitable Mitchell's Martial Arts. Concessions, including pizza and soft drinks will be available for purchase. Tickets can be purchased at the door for $10, $5 for Father’s.

OC Beach Lights

OC Beach Lights presents a Beach Lights Spectacular on Sunday, June 17th. The free laser lights show will be displayed on a giant five-story beach ball and is choreographed to music. Three shows will take place: 9:30, 10, and 10:30 pm. The show will be lighting up the beach at North Division Street in Ocean City three times every Sunday night through Labor Day Weekend.
