Mother's Day at the Humphreys House

Posted by Shorebread | Monday, May 14, 2012

This Mother's day weekend at the Humphreys House we took a small break from the work on the house, instead taking the time to do a little sprucing up, hanging some pictures, and enjoying more new floral discoveries in the yard.

The peonies and a rose bush that were here before us decided to grace us with some blooms just in time for the kids to pick for a centerpiece for Mother's Day dining.  It was our first Mother’s Day in the house and we still had enough done to the house for the week to host a small family brunch.

Making things easy for the the head chef, who also happens to be the mother in the house, food prep was done ahead of time.  A frittata with onions, peppers, garlic and brie was an easy way to feed a big group of people.  Adding some chopped, roasted potatoes, fresh fruit and of course some pastries, topped off the delicious meal.

The real pre-planning came into effect because as the fathers took care of the dirty dishes from brunch, a brisket for dinner was already cooking in the crock pot. At this past Friday's Farmers Market just down the street, we met a new vendor who happens to raise grass fed beef and lamb and we were more than excited to give it a try; supporting local farmers while feeling better about the quality of beef we are enjoying.  Planning to slow cook the brisket allowed us to sit on the porch and enjoy the wonderful weather and catch up with family without spending all day in the kitchen.

Wrapping up a most beautiful weekend after spending quality time with family, and being able to enjoy the day fully, we sat by the chiminea talking with the kids after dinner. We may not have done much in the way of renovations this week, but sometimes a good time with your family is more important.
