It’s that time of year when festive Christmas decorations in storefronts have been replaced with hearts, chocolates, and even a cupid or two. Valentine’s Day reminders are everywhere, conjuring up images of romance, calling to us all to celebrate the season of love with that special someone. But Valentine’s Day isn’t just all about romantic love. It’s also a time to honor the love shared amongst families, and is yet another reason to show the youngest among us how truly special they are.

If you’re looking for a kid-appropriate Valentine’s activity that offers a chance for families to spend time together, outside of the home—and who isn’t looking for an opportunity like that this time of year—this weekend’s 2013 Valentine’s Carnival fits the need and then some. Hosted by the United Way Young Leader’s Society and housed at Berlin Intermediate School this Saturday from 1 - 3pm, the event offers music and dancing, special guests, a photo booth, crafts, games, activities, food, prizes, and more. And it’s all free!

The event is open to children ages 5 – 12 and their families, providing a way to escape the doldrums of winter and have fun indoors. The carnival-type atmosphere is a perfect alternative to the video games, board games and movies we all find ourselves engaged in during the colder months.
