Holistic Health Fair Returns to Berlin - Alternative Health Practices for a Better You

Posted by Shorebread | Wednesday, February 22, 2012

Last year, two local business owners, Terri Street of Atlantic Retreat and Dr. Jeff Michael of Optimal Health Chiropractic, combined forces to bring a new kind of event to Berlin, MD—one that focused on a holistic approach to health and wellness. The first annual Berlin Holistic Health Fair shared options towards a healthier lifestyle with approximately 100 eager attendees. February 25th, the Holistic Health Fair returns to Berlin, and organizers are anticipating at least twice the turnout.

The Holistic Health Fair features alternative health practices that differ from the mainstream, and may be considered by some to be a little out of the box, begging the question as to how well the more unconventional approaches are received in a small town environment. Not to worry, says Grow Berlin Green Project Manager and proprietor of Nanakai’s Organic Spirit, Debbi Colley,

“Berlin is really on the forefront of alternative approaches on a wide spectrum, and continuing to move forward.”

“It’s great for a diverse group of folks who may not yet be into alternative approaches, and it’s kid-friendly,” said Colley. The health fair includes a wide spectrum of businesses—yoga, reiki, chiropractic care, acupuncture, massage, organic foods and cooking—appealing to a vast audience.

One of the goals of the Holistic Health Fair is to open up these practices so community members can explore their options. On a national level, alterative approaches to health are gaining popularity and acceptance as viable and even preferred options for health care and maintaining wellness. Many insurance companies have moved to coverage for chiropractic care, and some even include gym memberships, yoga classes, massage therapy and acupuncture.

Atlantic Retreat and Optimal Health Chiropractic co-sponsor the event. They are joined by Colley’s Nanakai’s Organic Spirit—who will be serving vegan sample plates for tasting including olive walnut spread, quinoa, celery salad for $5—Upper  Room Studio, and many others. The Berlin Chamber of Commerce is hosting the event.

Holistic practices focus on the whole person rather than an illness or just treating symptoms. People are taught to be responsible for their own well-being on a daily basis through the connection of mind, body, and spirit resulting in optimal health. In this way, all of the businesses presenting at the Holistic Health Fair can work in conjunction to bring about a better way of life, for you.

Shorebilly's Swill: Taking the High Road

Posted by Shorebread | Tuesday, February 21, 2012
Awhile back I had an experience in the bar which reminded me that either I’ve been doing this way too long, or that I’ve gotten kind of good at it. I’m not sure which is the more underlying theme to this story. I do know that my problem solving skills and situation handling have definitely improved over my many years behind the bar. The way I now deal with things is far different then it once was. I think it’s simply a matter of me carefully picking my battles as I get...READ POST.

Lately I have been sticking to a full proof packing plan of 5 key essentials that everyone should bring on any trip that you are planning. These 5 essentials will get...READ POST.

Harriet Tubman

Harriet Tubman was known as ‘the Moses of her people’. She found freedom for herself and some three-hundred other slaves whom she led north to safe lands. In the Civil War she served the Union Army as a nurse, scout, and a spy… and she was born and raised on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Last week, Shorebread took advantage of an enjoyable afternoon and participated in the Finding a Way to Freedom Driving Tour that follows the weaving historical trail that led so many to...READ POST.

Presidents Day Historic Revelation: The Humphreys House

Posted by Shorebread | Monday, February 20, 2012
It was very fitting that this weekend we took a trip to Annapolis, after all it is Presidents Day weekend.  I’ve been to downtown Annapolis countless times. I’ve done the state house tour when I was school aged, although my memory retention from those trip was never very good.  I still appreciate the history of the state capital, as well as the architecture.  The brick sidewalks that are delightfully imperfect undulating under the growth of old trees.   The...READ POST.

USDA Releases New Hardiness Zone Map: Does This Prove Change in Growing Seasons?

Posted by Shorebread | Thursday, February 16, 2012
Green thumb or not, you’ve most likely seen the evidence all around—Camellias, have bloomed, Daffodils are up, lettuce is sprouting; flowering trees have blossomed, others have buds on them—all significantly earlier than in years past. And it’s not only the present winter that has been mild, looking back to last fall, the growing season for vegetables extended much longer than normal. Leading to one big question for farmers and gardeners: Has our growing season changed?...READ POST.
