A Valentine's Gripe

As January begins to come to an end, I am reminded of the upcoming Holiday... Valentine's Day.
*Correction: I can't go anywhere without being reminded that Valentines Day is quickly approaching. From the billboard ads, to tv commercials - even the grocery store seems to capitalizing. Honestly, it seems that every Holiday now a days has become so overly commercialized that it takes away from the true meaning of the Holiday.
Trust me - Valentine's Day isn't my only Holiday over commercialization gripe - I find it somewhat shameful what marketing has done to any religious holiday. I swear, we don't celebrate the day for the gifts or the decor - that's not the reason for the Holiday! This being said, yelled, screamed from the rooftops... the majority of people want the commercialized Holiday; I too must regretfully admit - I too want those chocolates and flowers on Valentine's day - what girl wouldn't?

If you didn't already know - or put it together, Valentine's Day stems from a religious Holiday, celebrating St. Valentine. Somewhere along the line St. Valentine's Day began to coincide and eventually be tied together with a traditional Roman festival, being somewhat sexual in nature; nevertheless, today we have our modern celebration of LOVE. <3

Overall, I see the day as one to celebrate those you love in your life & to show them how thankful for all that they may do for you and mean to you. Sure - one could argue that this should be everyday - sadly, I'm 99% sure that this doesn't happen in most relationships.
What happened to making that perfect treat, or picking out the most amazing flower? How about making your own valentine, or writing a poem instead of googling it? Or just doing something sweet that you know they'll love - because you care? What does grabbing a $5 box of chocolates at the gas station really mean? Honest, that Russel Stover's box means nothing - although yummy, it doesn't really show your appreciation for another. This year - I think it's time to get back to more traditional ways of celebrating - spend time with those you love and really let them know their importance. Often, it's the little things that are the most thoughtful!
